About The AHHAB
The City of Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, a non-partisan advisory board that is community-based and funded by the City of Aurora, serves to act as a bridge between the Hispanic community and all other communities in the City of Aurora. The Advisory Board recognizes diversity throughout the City of Aurora and therefore makes a conscious effort to be all-inclusive.
The Vision of the Hispanic Board is to:
- Educate the public and our own community about the history of Hispanics who have helped shape the City of Aurora.
- Instill pride of our heritage by honoring those who have come before us and those who continue to make a difference in our Community.
- Participate, support and sponsor activities and education geared to the Hispanic Community.
The Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board was created in March 2002 to provide advice and coordinate organized events. The 2002 Board’s creation was organized by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events and was charged with organizing events that had been planned by the Youth Services Department in the schools. One of the primary intentions of the formation of the board was to encourage wider community involvement in the planning process.
The Board is responsible for planning, and participating in, activities that promote a deeper understanding of the Hispanic community. Funds shall be used primarily for Board approved activities and are also used for Board participation in, or sponsorship of other activities. The Board executes three (3) main events in the Aurora community:
1) Community Breakfast (since 2000),
2) El Dia de los Niños (since 2001), and
3) Fiesta de Luces (since 2005).
Board meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall (44 East Downer, Aurora) in the 5th Floor Conference Room. All meetings are open to the public.
